Beginning of the end?

Article Abstract:

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has been defeated in the Knesset on the preliminary reading of a bill to dissolve the house. However, this does not mean that he cannot avoid an early election. The bill must pass three further readings, gaining majorities of 61 in the 120-member Knesset, before it can become law, and significant changes in the atmosphere of Israeli politics mean that it can no longer be taken for granted that dissolution bills will eventually be passed.

Benjamin Netanyahu and his government in Israel are coming dangerously close to ending the peace process with the Palestinians. The potential appointment of Ariel Sharon as finance minister makes conflict more likely, because Sharon is an advocate of Jewish settlement in the West Bank.
