Beijing in unlikely to unseat Lee: but its tactics may weaken independence sentiment in Taiwan

Article Abstract:

China's fierce reactions against Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui are more likely to weaken his opposition, the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, and thus strengthen Lee. Beijing would apparently prefer a leader in Taiwan who more enthusiastically supports reunification, which Lee in fact endorses. However, to be electable such a person must also respond to the Taiwanese peoples' wishes for greater international recognition, as Lee has with his recent trip to the US and other activities.

Harry Wu: a possible resolution; but problems stemming from Lee visit to U.S. remain unresolved

Article Abstract:

The US will find it hard to appease Chinese anger over Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's visit while Beijing may find a quiet ending to the Harry Wu affair. China will probably try Wu and give him a stiff sentence, but it can then deport him with a warning not to return. US President Bill Clinton can not readily back down before China because of public sentiment and pressure from Congress, but his administration is seeking a tacit understanding with China that Lee's visit will not be repeated.

Lee should play down U.S. visit

Article Abstract:

China, the US, and Taiwan are all well advised to minimize the importance of Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's June visit to his college in the US. China is afraid that the US's reversal on its opposition to the visit signals a change in fundamental US policy toward China. If China thinks that fear is confirmed, it could create a disastrous international realignment, even though everyone knows US congressional pressure, not an administration change of heart, is at work.
