Beijing steers car market to compete with foreign firms

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government is consolidating its automobile industry so that it may compete with major automobile firms after joining the World Trade Organization. Three main companies: First Automobile Industry Corp., Dongfeng Automotive Group, and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. will gain preferential treatment to compete with General Motors Corp. and Ford Co.

Regulators suspend government sales of equity stakes

Article Abstract:

A change in policy stopping sales of state-owned equities sent the Chinese stock market soaring, up almost 10% in the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets, and up more than 4% in Hong Kong. Such a policy reversal has drawbacks, however, in that it will delay the raising of funds for a national pension fund and slow down government reforms for state enterprises.
