Believe it or not

Article Abstract:

The South Korean economy is certainly seeing slower growth levels at present than in the past, with most observers believing that it will expand by no more than 7% in 1996, down from 9% in 1995. However, economic conditions are almost definitely not as bad as some media coverage has suggested. Indeed, politicians and private economists believe that the slow-down in economic growth will not cause serious problems. The government is now focusing on boosting 'corporate vitality' as a way of reviving economic growth.

Slow going

Article Abstract:

South Korea's economy seems to be starting to recover, but there are still many challenges to be addressed. The debt-restructuring deal agreed with foreign banks only covers around $24 billion of the $153 billion owed by South Korea to overseas creditors, and there has been a sharp rise in the cost of servicing existing debt. Furthermore, the country's corporate sector has won-denominated borrowings exceeding $300 billion, and there will inevitably be a rise in corporate bankruptcies.

Persistence pays

Article Abstract:

South Korea has a rapidly growing economy but presents a number of obstacles for US companies attempting to do business there. US firms complain of over-regulation and bureaucratic red tape. For companies that persevere, however, the South Korean market has proved to be lucrative. The greatest opportunities for success in South Korea are for US firms that sell hard-to-obtain or technologically superior products.
