More flexible shortlists, please: reforming the Oscars

Article Abstract:

The rules that limit Oscar nominations to just 5 per category assure that in years with many fine movies, many deserving films do not win nominations. Films that were slighted for the 1996 awards include 'Hamlet,' 'Michael Collins' and 'Evita.' Behind the scenes politics often determines what is nominated.

Article Abstract:

The 1997 Cannes Film Festival was well-attended, especially since it was the festival's 50th anniversary. Several films that received high honors were not in English, despite a trend toward the production of more English-language films.
