Best choice for India: renouncing the nuclear option

Article Abstract:

The Indian government has shown its aversion to the signing of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty due to security concerns and political reasons. In remaining ambivalent, it has allowed itself to become prey in local politics and earn the ire of the international community who are against nuclear proliferation. The country is better off signing both treaties due to the extremely high costs of operating nuclear weapons facilities which would make any security gains seem moot.

A budding relationship needs nurturing

Article Abstract:

Relations between the US and India have not been very close, primarily because of the latter's strategic links with the former USSR. In the post-Cold War world, however, the two countries are trying to forge a new relationship as evidenced by US Commerce Sec. Ron Brown's recent visit to India. Some irritants undoubtedly remain but the two nations should realize that this relationship is both important and mutually beneficial so care must be taken to ensure its growth.

U.S attention on Jakarta leaves some observers puzzled: Washington appears undecided if Suharto is the cause or best hope for the country's fiscal ills

Article Abstract:

The US' focus on Indonesia is leaving some political analysts puzzled because of the relative lack of interest the US has shown previously. Analysts wonder about the motives Pres Bill Clinton has on encouraging his Indonesian Pres Suharto but some speculate that it is because of the rapport that both leaders enjoy. Pres Bill Clinton called Pres Suharto in January 1998 encouraging him on the reforms needed by Indonesia to survive.
