Greek shipping magnates, long the dominant figures in the world's shipping industry, fear that the cartelization of the industry is putting an end to their dominance. The Greeks are also being affected by a combination of poor freight rates, taxation, and heirs who refuse to join the family business.

Commercial property markets in the US and Britain are giving indications that they are heading towards a recovery. Billions of dollars in building and non-performing loans have been sold. In the US, $4 billion in commercial loans have been bought so far in 1993.
