Big Taiwan chip makers reduce their forecasts for net profits

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) posted forecasted a decline of approximately 60% in its net profits for the 2001 year. United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) forecasted a 74% drop in its net profits for the year.

Steady progress suggests worst may be over for TSMC

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. may finally be pulling out of its financial slump with third quarter results slightly higher than expected with an income of NT$1.24 billion. United Microelectronics Corp. reported a net loss of NT$4.02 billion for the third quarter, and Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. had a net loss of US$118.3 million.
