Big U.S. rate cut doesn't clear Asia's cloudy outlook

Article Abstract:

The Federal Reserve's reduction of the federal-funds target by a half a percentage point will have a positive impact of Asia in the short-term, but the region still faces the long-term issues of not enough pricing power, profits growth and too much capacity, which will not be altered by Fed cutting rates by 50 basis points, according to Chi Lo of Standard Chartered Bank. Other analysts take a different view, finding the Fed's rate change beneficial to the Asian economy. The pessimism raised by the rate change is discussed.

The pinch of higher taxes: Japanese stores see a temporary impact

Article Abstract:

The April 1, 1997 sales tax hike in Japan is expected to continue having a negative impact on the country's overall retail industry until mid-1997. The increase from 3% to 5% has resulted to an 8% decrease in Apr 1997 sales. Dealers of cars and other durable goods such as TV sets, refrigerators, washing machines are likely to be hurt most. Food and clothing sales, however, are expected to be stable.
