Big deals lead the way

Article Abstract:

Business services was the main industrial sector in the United States for acquisitions by United Kingdom firms in 1996. There were 27 acquisitions within the business services sector, including the 1.03 billion pounds sterling acquisition of information services and credit rating concern Experian by Great Universal stores. There were 3 acquisitions in the retail distribution sector and 11 in the wholesale distribution sector. A list of acquisitions of US firms by UK companies is presented.

A very positive year for M & A

Article Abstract:

In 1994, 1,520 merger and acquisition deals were carried out involving UK firms, representing a total value of 24.8 billion pounds sterling. The figures also represent a rise from 1,248 deals in 1993, valued at 17.4 billion pounds. The number of public deals rose to 62, valued at 5.1 billion pounds, compared to 53 in 1993, valued at 3 billion pounds. An overview of the mergers and acquisition sector in 1994 is given, including various tables.

A fairly static year

Article Abstract:

Companies based in mainland Europe purchased 112 UK companies worth 3.6 billion pounds sterling in 1994, compared with 106 worth 2.4 billion pounds sterling in 1993. The three largest purchases were in the insurance, motor vehicles and parts and chemical industries. The largest deal was the 1.5 billion pounds sterling acquisition of Rover by BMW.
