Billboard firms around Europe refuse to carry Benetton ad

Article Abstract:

Avenir and Mills and Allen, two of the largest billboard contractors in Europe, have refused to run Benetton's latest advertising at any of their sites in the European Union. They feel that the advertisement, which shows a black stallion mounting a white mare, will damage the image of outdoor advertising. The posters will be seen in Norway, Denmark and a few sites in Belgium initially. They will then run in most other west and east European countries from early Sep 1996.

Benetton retailer rebellion breaks out from Germany

Article Abstract:

Italian clothing company Benetton and various German retailers are suing and and counter-suing each other regarding the former's controversial ad campaigns. An advert of a dead Croat soldier in blood-soaked clothes is claimed to have resulted in boycotts and a subsequent 30% drop in sales. However, Benetton claims that poor sales are just the result of poor consumer spending in Germany in general. Benetton is suing the retailers for refusing to pay for unsold stock.

French ad community sheds no tears over Benetton fine

Article Abstract:

Italian clothing retailer Benetton deserved to be fined for running an ad campaign showing parts of a human body marked 'HIV positive,' according to most representatives of the French advertising industry. The industry believes that ads which are in poor taste can no longer be tolerated, especially as they tend to damage the industry's reputation. The company has had to pay $9,500 each to three people infected with the HIV virus who brought legal action against it.
