Bitter memory for Taiwan

Article Abstract:

Analysts had erroneously predicted a recovery for Taiwan's semiconductor chip industry in 1997. Some securities firms are expecting the industry to stabilize no sooner than the middle of 1999 and do not foresee any surge in demands for computer chips before then. Major manufacturers such as Taiwan's Acer Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc of the US have been forced to reevaluate profit forecasts some 82% for 1997. Semiconductor maker Nan Ya Plastics has similarly forecast reductions in revenue of about NT$400 million.

Taiwan drafts big dreams

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's leading chip producers' pronouncement of megabillion-dollar projects seems to run contradictory to government economic efforts. Plans by Macronix International Company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing company and United Microelectronics Corporation are stirring public speculation of unfeasible projects. The development of a 12-inch wafer-fabrication plant is much to be achieved in a century's time in contrast to their ten year projection.

Confusion surrounding chip makers in Taiwan enhances defensive plays

Article Abstract:

Semiconductor chip prices may be falling fast in Taiwan but firms involved in the industry are staying put and expect that investment in the electronics industry will not dwindle. The mood with regards to these recent price declines, which arose from a glut in inventories, has been a mixed bag of confusion and careful optimism. Manufacturers, nonetheless, may have to reassess plans of building new factories in light of the oversupply.
