Blockbuster enters the fray in Hong Kong; rental giant steps into market as VCDs are gaining ground on VHS

Article Abstract:

Blockbuster Inc is about to deal with massive competition as a result of Hong Kong's fast-changing entertainment taste. Hong Kong's video-compact disk (VCD) industry is experiencing a boom since the shutdown of KPS Retail Stores Ltd. One of the major reasons for the surge in VCD popularity is price. This has resulted in the increase in the percentage of homes owning VCD players and the decline in the number of people with video home system format. Another major factor affecting VCD popularity is the proliferation of pirated VCDs which is, in turn, fueled by parallel-import laws.
