Article Abstract:

The killing by Ciskei police of African National Congress (ANC) demonstrators has focussed world attention on the problem of the status of the 'homelands' in a post-apartheid South Africa. South African Pres de Klerk's National Party hopes the homelands will remain in existence, but the ANC firmly opposes this.

A group led by Afrikaner Freedom Foundation leader Carel Boshoff would like to begin a separate state for Afrikaners in the isolated, semi-desert area of the Northern Cape. The Afrikaner Resistance Movement wants to deny citizenship to anyone not racially pure.

The credibility of Afrikaner nationalism was severely damaged after zealots of the movement invaded a meeting of political parties at the World Trade Center. The action also threatens the existence of the Concerned South Africans Group.
