Blood lines

Article Abstract:

Managing director Datuk Francis Yeoh Sock Ping of Malaysian bldg contractor YTL Corp strives to disprove the adage that the third generation spends the money that the first two earned. He has built the company his grandfather founded into one of the country's five largest contractors, winning the first license to build and operate a private power plant and assembling Malaysia's first large financing scheme without foreign money. Now he wants to replicate that project throughout Asia, though his housing projects are more successful.

Article Abstract:

The Directorate General of Posts and Telecommunications (DGPT), Vietnam's telecommunication monopoly, is still growing despite US restriction on communication links between the two countries. DGPT is showing its continuous growth through ambitious projects, including the installation of a microwave network that connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Further expansion and growth are expected to result from joint ventures with Australian, French, Italian, German and South Korean telecommunications corporations.

Election strategy: no threat to communist party rule in July polls

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's electoral exercise on Jul 19, 1992 is not expected to produce radical changes. The election of 395 representatives to the National Assembly is expected to run smoothly with few complications. The ruling communist government should easily run off with a majority of seats considering the procedural complexities of applying as an independent candidate. Nevertheless, Vietnam has been observed to have gradually become tolerant of criticisms of unpopular laws and officials.
