Bloody catalyst

Article Abstract:

The massacre of peaceful Thai demonstrators on May 18 1992 has served as a catalyst in exposing the ambition and megalomania of Gen Suchinda Kraprayoon. People are now doubly eager to sacrifice more to oust Suchinda from the premiership. Thailand is becoming aware that government without public participation is democracy's farce. An important goal is to weed out 'evil' militarymen, especially those belonging to the powerful Class 5 clique. The second and more important goal is in desiring and promoting democracy and to choose worthy public servants to run the country.

Handle with care

Article Abstract:

The victory of pro-democracy coalition led by Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai in Thailand's election by a small margin is only the first step towards full democracy in the country as the new government has to contend with several problems. It must face political volatility due to lack of cohesion within the coalition, deal with the opposition and improve its relationship with the military. It must also reckon with political corruption and old-style politicians who are seeking power for themselves.

Thailand's military threat

Article Abstract:

There is optimism that military supremacy over civilian government in Thailand has ended with the appointment of Anand Panyarachun as prime minister. The surprise appointment came after strong anti-military moves from the political and public spheres. However, the military role as the guardian of democracy, and not as proponent of business or politics, must be reinforced. More importantly, the citizens need to uphold and exercise their right to choose the nation's leaders.
