Bold talk

Article Abstract:

Peregrine Investments Holdings wishes to boost the market for H-shares, stocks in Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong, by selling shares of Jingwei Textile Machinery at low prices. In 1995 only three companies listed H-shares. It may be best to see how the stock does before buying it. On one hand, Jungwei may do well because the textile industry in China is profitable and their profits have increased. On the other hand, Jungwei may not be efficient as they are subject to China's planned economy, with regulated production, pricing, and trade.

Positive thinking

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's major brokerages predict a rebound in the Hang Seng index based on the belief China will ease its credit policy, and on the recent poor performance of Hong Kong-listed H shares of Chinese companies. WorldSec International claims the Hnag Seng will more than double to reach 20,000 by 1997, while Baring Asset Mgmt notes stable interest rates, improving earnings, and the like. Some observers claim the H-share companies, such as Harbin Power Equipment, are gaining autonomy and repositioning themselves.

Political jitters

Article Abstract:

Movements in the Hongkong Stock Exchange are closely linked to China's politics and economic policies. Analysts predict that the Hang Seng Index will rise 1,500 points in the first half of 1993, especially because of the economic integration with China. Oversubscription of new issues will continue to influence the market.
