Bonds of convenience

Article Abstract:

Selling a stake in Japanese companies to foreign investors has been seen as shameful in the past. However, many Japanese firms are changing their approach. Software company, Nihon Micom, was sold to Intuit for $39 million and Nikko Securities has arranged a deal with the Travelers Group. There were 51 foreign deals in 1997 compared to 36 in 1996. Culture differences between Japanese and American or European companies may cause problems and Japanese companies need to be familiar with how business in conducted in Europe.

New man at the helm

Article Abstract:

Evgeni Nazdratenko replaced Vladimir Kuznetsov as provincial governor of Primorski Region and its capital city, Vladivostok, in May 1993. Kuznetsov, who took office when the city was opened to foreigners in 1992, was forced from office due to worsening crime, pollution and rising prices. Nazdratenko will emphasize dealing with these problems rather than promoting economic ties between the Russian Far East and the Asia-Pacific region as his predecessor preferred to do.
