Article Abstract:

Regional governments in Japan are utilizing well-funded and state-of-the-art private and public universities to attract back talented students who go to Tokyo, Japan, and to provide a new boost to their economics. Regional governments believe that establishing new regional colleges will help provinces in retaining their local talent and in opening staffing pools of potential employees that will attract firms to invest into the provinces. The success of the effort will make the opening of state-of-the-art universities a practice among provinces in Japan and other countries in Asia.

Article Abstract:

St. John College is one of the first private-school operators to request the Thailand Stock Exchange's permission to list shares following the exchange's Feb. 1995 decision to accept schools. St. John College's application has spurred controversy as many involved factions, particularly parents, have expressed concern that the listing will result in higher tuition fees. However, many Thai investors support St. John College's plan to list stocks, noting that the inclusion of schools will further diversify the Thai stock market.
