Booting out the better known

Article Abstract:

The Council of Guardians has disqualified a number of key reformist candidates for planned elections in Iran, leaving the less well known candidates. The reformists, in the Islamic Participation Front, has signed up several dozen loyalists, so some will remain to fight the election. Some religious intellectuals argue that there should be more of a separation between religion and day-to-day politics. There are 12 members of the Council of Guardians, six of whom are clerics.

The people against the mullahs

Article Abstract:

Iran is debating the extent to which reform should be permitted, an issue that has become more urgent since Muhammad Khatami was elected as president in 1997. Iran has become more open, but senior clerics still hod great power. There have been calls for clerics to loosen their control, even from among the clerics themselves. Reformists have been cautious, but there is growing pressure for change, and this is becoming impatience with caution as well as with clerical rule.
