Softbank is a Japanese internet conglomerate that has taken over Nippon Credit Bank, and the bank has to replace a partner, Ito-Yokado, which has dropped out. Softbank had Cerberus Capital Management as its main rival, and Cerberus aimed to divide up the bank, selling some parts and floating others. This would have been unacceptable, with Cerberus being a foreign company, especially as Japan is holding elections, and a successful local company was providing an alternative.
