Brains for hire

Article Abstract:

Electronics firms based in Hongkong are increasingly turning to China as a source for software programmers and engineers. VTech, a maker of personal computers and mobile telephones, exemplifies this trend by employing 150 Chinese engineers at its factory in Shenzhen, China near Hongkong. The company plans on employing 500 Chinese engineers and programmers by 1995. Non-Hongkong-based companies, most notably IBM, are also recruiting in China. The low cost of skilled labor in China has caused this trend. For instance, Chinese engineers are paid 20% less than Hongkong-based engineers.

Spring in their step

Article Abstract:

Nike Inc's successful combination of low production costs and short production time with high-quality shoes has merited the company a corner on the market for athletic shoes. Its production process allows footwear designed in the US to be produced to specifications by capable Asian manufacturers employing cheap labor, such as those in South Korea, Taiwan, China, Indonesia and Thailand, which turn out 99% of Nike's annual inventory of 90 million shoes. Other countries being targeted by the company for manufacturing operations are Vietnam, India and Mexico.

The China connection: Nike is making the most of all that cheap labour

Article Abstract:

Athletic shoe manufacturer Nike Inc is taking advantage of government initiatives to revive its manufacturing operations in China. The main difference between the new efforts and the 1980s program, however, is that Nike now deals with Taiwanese companies which operate the production lines in China instead of dealing with state enterprises. This reinforces China's lure for the footwear industry which stands to benefit from the cheap labor, improved infrastructure and favorable investment opportunities.
