Article Abstract:

Leander Paes has brought home India's first medal in an Olympic individual event since 1952. He won the bronze medal in singles tennis, duplicating his father's achievement in winning a bronze team medal in field hockey in 1972. Indians rejoiced over the victory after their long drought, an abysmal showing that had led some to call for an end to India's participation in the Olympic Games. Paes took up tennis at age eight when he fractured his knee playing soccer and his father forbade contact sports.
