Breaking taboos, Japan redefines its role with China

Article Abstract:

As China plans to drill for natural gas in the East China Sea, Japan is planning to launch a rival exploration effort. New Japanese leaders are projecting Japan as more assertive and are willing to promote the armed forces. Because of memories of Japanese aggression on China in World War II, Japanese foreign policy has traditionally been muted.
