Bridging the gap: Edmund Hollinghurst of Gifford and Partners is an engineer and an aesthete who sees bridge design as a form of sculpture

Article Abstract:

Edmund Hollinghurst is managing director of Gifford and Partners, and is an engineer commissioner at the RFAC. He joined Edwin Gifford in 1973, after spending time at Ove Arup, where he designed beam reinforcements for the entrance foyer of the Sydney Opera House. Gifford and Partners has the character of a family firm and an international reputation for high quality bridge design. Hollinghurst argues strongly for teamwork and welcomes the involvement of architects in bridge design. He greatly admires Santiago Calatrava, but considers his bridges as sculptures more than engineering.

High hopes or shard times?

Article Abstract:

Strategic views from bop, found that Renzo Piano's shard of glass neither reduced the visibility nor the setting of St Paul's Cathedral. The Tower of London, other listed building and conservation areas was to be set against the fact that modern development, including the existing cluster of buildings at London Bridge, is already a feature of the settings.
