Saving grace: a doctor returns to his war-torn homeland to write a prescription for peace

Article Abstract:

US-trained doctor Mohammed Haider Raza heads the Afghan Red Crescent as one of the country's few truly neutral authorities, and his organization may be the only functioning national body there. Trapped in Afghanistan as a vacationing student in 1978, he worked with Ahmad Shah Masud's guerilla forces and ran health services in areas controlled by the Afghan mujahideen. Later he finished his degree and practiced in the US, but returned at Commander Masud's request, on the condition that he operate nationwide.
