Bright and beautiful?

Article Abstract:

Corus held a seminar entitled 'Colour in the Built Environment' at the beginning of Apr 2000. At this event, Hugh Pearman, architecture correspondent of the Sunday Times, claimed that colour has always been a feature of the built environment in the UK. He believes that the decision by modern architects in the 1980s and early 1990s to focus on white and silver was a reaction to the adoption of bright colours by the Post-Modernists. Other speakers included architects Simon Allford of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Christophe Egret of Alsop & Stormer. They both use very strong colours as a key element of their work.

A disaster and a tragedy

Article Abstract:

The commissioning of the Cardiff Opera House in 1995 and the subsequent failure of the project is told by Lord Nicholas Crickhowell in the book Opera House Lottery. Lord Crickhowell developed a good rapport with the architect, Zaha Hadid, who, although quite stubborn, would take criticism well. Hadid's design was not received well by other architects or the press and pressure was put on Crickhowell to cancel her design. Cost was a major factor in the failure of the project. The Millennium Commission, which was funding the building, would only invest 50% of the budget. The project was later abandoned.

Article Abstract:

The Movement for Innovation (M4I), which aims to encourage the development of new ways of working in the UK construction industry, is seeking a new phase of demonstration projects. Its two new interest groups will be focusing on projects showing innovation in sustainability, the environment and elimination of waste, and respect for people. Construction Minister Nick Raynsford has highlighted several challenges for M4I, including giving a higher profile to sustainability and drawing up a clients' charter.
