Bringing to life an octagonal space linking old and new

Article Abstract:

The refurbishment work at Microfocus' offices in Newbury, Berkshire performed by Sutton Griffin and Morgan architects is reviewed. The eight-sided building has been upgraded to blend into an older, linked building. It has a pitched, zinc clad roof, with deep oversailing eaves. The office accommodation has displacement ventilation with a new air conditioning system. Custom-designed uplighters and downlighters with low-energy fluorescent lamps are used to light the premises. The building work cost 3.7 million pounds sterling.

A vision for Belfast

Article Abstract:

It is vital to encourage high quality design, according to John Cole, president of the Royal Society of Ulster Architects and head of estate planning at the Northern Irish Health Estates Agency. For this reason, he has been involved in initiating and organising three important design competitions in Northern Ireland. He also has extensive involvement in projects relating to the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). He believes that PFI presents potential dangers for the quality of design in public sector buildings.
