Britain is different

Article Abstract:

Britain is a union of different nations which is three hundred years old, rather than an ethnic nation, and that union could dissolve. There are two forces affecting the British state, internal devolution, and an erosion of sovereignty as the European Union (EU) replaces national institutions. The Conservative Party represents the ruling Labor Party as seeking to break up Britain. Britain has remained stable, despite political changes over 300 years. Deentralization has led to some power moving away from the center, and this may be beneficial.

Better late than never: Britain's chancellor was right to raise interest rates, but would be wrong to think he can now relax

Article Abstract:

Chancellor Kenneth Clarke raised interest rates a quarter of a percentage point in the UK on Oct 30, 1996. The increase caught many people by surprise but it seemed to have a beneficial effect, not only in the UK but also in international financial markets.
