London has had a competitive edge over Broadway in producing hit musicals in the last 20 years, largely on the strength of Andrew Lloyd Weber hits such as 'Phantom of the Opera.' The rivalry between the New York and London musical theater scenes is chronicled from the 1860s.

The revival of Frank Loesser's musical 'Guys and Dolls' has been a smash hit on Broadway, and has inspired the production of several musical revivals that have kept ticket windows humming. It would be nice if new American musicals could attract the same kind of attention.
