Broken toys: cash-strapped armed forces look for a new role

Article Abstract:

Reduced defense spending is compelling the Philippines armed forces to ponder reorganization and the taking-on of new tasks. US military aid for the Philippines will be $7.7 million in 1993, down substantially from the $200 million received annually before the US lost its Philippine bases. Consequently, Defense Committee Chmn Orlando Mercado believes that a plan to upgrade the military will have to be implemented gradually over 10-15 years to save money. Facing a diminished threat from communist guerrillas, the army is now taking part in non-military activities such as disaster relief.

Several figures indicate a resurgence of tourism in the Philippines. The number of foreigners visiting the Philippines went up by 21% in 1992, enabling the tourist industry to take in $1.67 billion, a 30.6% increase over the $1.28 billion earned in 1991. These and other statistics suggest that the tourist industry is recovering from the political upheavals and natural disasters of recent years. Most tourists still come from the US but a rising number come from East Asia. A master plan has been devised for making increased tourism compatible with environmental preservation.

Full-throttle finance: local knowledge powers motorcycle credit company

Article Abstract:

Putra Surya Multidana (PSM) of Jakarta, Indonesia is a finance company concentrating on the financing of motorcycles and light commercial vehicles. The company finance 165,000 of the 1.36 million motorcycles sold in 1996 and it is to be listed on the Jakarta and Surabaya stock exchanges. It currently lends to 200,000 customers, each of whom is given a credit evaluation by a surveyor. The motorcycle is released to the customer, once approved, and the process can take less than 48 hours.
