Brothers in arms: the U.S. worries about Sino-Russian military cooperation

Article Abstract:

The purchase of two Sovremenny-class destroyers and supersonic missiles by China from Russia has caused anxiety in the Pentagon about the potential purposes of such acquisitions. Some policymakers believe that the distrust between Beijing and Moscow is too deep to allow them to form a strategic alliance but some feel that Beijing could purchase any military technology from Russia, even if Russia avoided an alliance. China's military could not undertake a protracted blockade of Taiwan at the moment, as its defence electronics lag behind that of Taiwan's. China is however concentrating on technological modernisation.

A chill wind: stealthier nuclear missile raises U.S. fears

Article Abstract:

China's May 29 test-launching of the East Wind 31 solid-fuel ballistic missile raised tensions and inflamed anxieties both in the region and worldwide. Its maximum range of 8,000 km is less than that of some existing Chinese missiles, but it can be transported by truck or, potentially, submarine and launched quickly. US congressmen point to it as an incentive to build an antimissile system, a project Japan may join. A Chinese nuclear missile threat could make the US hesitate if China attacks a neighbor.

Cruise control: relaxed U.S. export controls could help China build stealthier and longer-range cruise missiles, Pentagon officials claim

Article Abstract:

China's deal with Pratt & Whitney of the US, an aero-engine maker, could allow it to make stealthier and longer-range cruise missiles, according to US defence officials. The joint venture between Pratt & Whitney's Canadian division and China National South Aeroengine and Machinery Co (SAEC), will establish a strategic partnership making parts for small gas-turbine engines and develop jet engines. It is likely that the US administration will allow the deal if it comes up for approval.
