UK companies get the flags out in the US

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom companies spent $38.9 billion to acquire 148 US companies in 1996. European companies, including British, spent $67.5 billion in total on 337 acquisitions. Goldman Sachs acted as adviser on nine acquisitions worth 7.4 billion pounds sterling in total, including the 1.9 billion pounds sterling acquisition of Stop & Shop by Koninklijke Ahold of the Netherlands. German firms accounted for most acquisitions after the UK. Morgan Stanley and NM Rothschild are acting as advisors to British Telecommunications in its acquisition of MCI Communications, although the deal has not yet been completed.

Big deals are back

Article Abstract:

There were nine public takeovers in the UK in the first quarter of 1995, at a value of 10.1 billion pounds sterling, compared with 15 deals worth 1.3 billion pounds sterling in the same period of 1994. Some 191 private companies were acquired, at a value of 3.3 billion pounds sterling, compared with 187 companies worth 1.7 billion pounds sterling in the first quarter of 1994. However, there were only 95 divestments in the first quarter of 1995, compared with 112 in the year-earlier period.

Schroders celebrates a good start to the year

Article Abstract:

There were 319 domestic merger and acquisition deals in the UK in the first quarter of 1997, at a value of 10.7 billion pounds sterling. This compares with 320 deals worth 8.8 billion pounds sterling in the year-earlier period. The number of private company deals rose from 157 to 202, at a value of 2.3 billion pounds sterling, from 1.6 billion pounds sterling. The number of management buyouts remained almost unchanged, but their value almost doubled to 835 million pounds sterling.
