Budget airlines

Article Abstract:

The UK market for budget airlines was worth 607.2 million pounds sterling in 1999, up by 66.2% from 1998. Some 13.8 million passengers travelled on budget airlines in 1999, a rise of around 59% from 1998. The budget airlines market expanded in value terms by 608% in the period 1995 to 1999, with passenger numbers increasing by 527%. The share of all air travel to and from the UK accounted for by budget airlines is expected to rise to 4.7% by value in 1999, from only 0.8% in 1995. The main reason for the growing popularity of budget airlines is that they offer substantially lower fares than conventional airlines operating on the same routes.

Budget hotels

Article Abstract:

The UK budget hotel market is forecast to increase by 70% from 482 million pounds sterling in 1999 to 820 million pounds sterling by 2993, driven by consumer demand for a high quality but cheaper product. The market will become limited by potential sites as many companies expand into the motorway hotel sector and business market. Budget hotels tend to cater to families during the weekend and cost-conscientious business travellers during the week.
