Marketing takes on political vibes

Article Abstract:

Advertisement with political overtones is fast becoming a trend. For instance, Kellogg's Special K Campaign is truly a political message albeit done in wit and style, without any sign of heavy handedness. The TV ad shows males complaining about having their mothers' thighs, but has been singled out as the most positive advertisement directed at women by a Chicago women's organization. Politically-laced messages are also a very effective way of getting people's attention. This can be seen in Benetton's famous ad showing images of AIDS patients, terrorism and mating horses.

Automobiles Citroen SA's television campaign for the launching of its Citroen Xsara Coupe in Jun 1998 featuring supermodel Claudia Schiffer has aroused a lot of controversy. The 5-million pounds sterling commercial, which shows a naked Schiffer driving away in the Xsara Coupe, has earned for the company a reputation for risque advertising. The Independent Television Commission has received 350 complaints about it on the grounds of decency.

Article Abstract:

A new generation of public relations-inspired crisis consultants is emerging in Europe as a result of increasing obsessions with corporate reputation. These consultants scan various media such as the newspapers, television and the Internet for any hostile references to their clients. Among the biggest corporate concerns in 1999 were accidental environmental pollution, product recalls, consumer terrorism and labor disputes.
