Building slowly for the future: South Africa

Article Abstract:

South Africa's house-building program will increase in 1997, but even with subsidies the poor may not be able to afford a house. Rental housing will comprise a small part of the program, but the authorities have been ignoring 'site and service,' in which the state supplies only a plot and utilities.

Turbulent lady: South Africa

Article Abstract:

Winnie Mandela was criticized for a speech that criticized the South African government she gave at the funeral of a policeman in Feb 1995. She is also under fire for her alleged authoritarian management and financial mismanagement of the Women's League. She has several powerful supporters.
