Co-operation in a niche market: the case of Fiat and PSA in multi purpose vehicles

Article Abstract:

Companies which cooperate in a niche market can benefit from economies of scale. However, these companies will remain competitors on a larger scale, highlighting the extent to which scale alliances can have limits and reduce the span of differentiation. This is show in the case of PSA and Fiat, which created an alliance to design, develop and produce a completely new multi purpose vehicle. This has allowed the two companies to gain success in a sector where they would probably otherwise not have been successful. However, there is now a problem with poor product differentiation.
