Building techniques

Article Abstract:

Architect, Antoni Gaudi developed a system of ruled surface geometry in the design of the Sagrada Familia cathedral, Barcleona, Spain. This is expressed in the models he designed but these cannot be scaled up for use in the construction of the as yet unfinished building without refinement. Computer-aided design techniques are being used to analyse and refine Gaudi's models and to direct the work of robot stone cutting machines. These modern methods are used on site along with traditional crafts. Gaudi also anticipated the use of new materials like artificial stone and the completion of the cathedral continues his ideal of combining art and science.

Stadia for the next century: for the Lobb Partnership, CAD is crucial to the development of design proposals, as it allows engineering solutions to be fully integrated

Article Abstract:

The Lobb Partnership has a reputation internationally for stadium design and its projects include the Olympic stadium for the 2000 Sydney games, and the refurbishment of Cardiff Arms Park. The company develops designs as 3D models from the beginning of a project, and it used Microstation to develop its proposals for the Cardiff Arms Park stadium, which involved complex logistics.
