Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi constantly urges her countrymen to be more patient in waiting for the realization of democracy and reconciliation in their country. Most Burmese find much comfort in her assurances, considering that their country is always at the brink of falling into violent political conflicts. Meanwhile, foreign governments, businesses and agencies are capitalizing on Burma's need for aid and investment to force the government to institute more political and social reforms.

Return of wealthy emigres after long exile is helping Burma in its economic transition

Article Abstract:

Burmese returnees are playing a major role in reviving their country's economy. Similar with China and Vietnam which have shifted to market economies, Burma is witnessing the return of Burmese whose families went on exile and who serve as liaisons for foreigners seeking investments in the country. The returnees are hopeful that economic prosperity will come as a precedent to meaningful democratic reforms.
