Designing homes to replace the long-stay hospitals

Article Abstract:

People with learning difficulties are no longer being cared for in hospitals and their needs present a challenge for architects. Small units in the community are now being developed where patients have as much independence as possible and the carers act in a supportive, rather than controlling role. Architects need to consider the special requirements of such homes, including space in kitchens and bathrooms, safety and mobility. While the provision for the mentally handicapped is progressing, the needs of young mentally ill patients have yet to be considered.

Technical knowledge needs to be shared

Article Abstract:

Students of architecture need greater constructional knowledge. Tutors in schools of architecture may be newly qualified, and therefore lacking in practical experience. Students need to know more about specification, costs and the collaboration required on a design. Oxford Brookes' school of architecture is bridging the gap between construction and design.

NVQs are too narrow for architects' training

Article Abstract:

It has been suggested that an NVQ in building design provides a viable alternative to architects' training. It is claimed that a level 5 NVQ equips a student better than the RIBA Part III Exemption. NVQs are too narrow and do not produce a high level of understanding or range of skills. Neither do they cover architectural history or theory.
