Harris Corp has helped build Malaysia into a leading semiconductor supplier thanks to its intensive investments in both new equipment and worker training. The company likes the country's productive workforce, stability, and infrastructure development, and is rewarding it with another $250 million in investment through 2000 and relocating there its Singapore facility. Harris tries to increase each employee's productivity 10% to 15% annually, and strives to retain workers by keeping them happy and interested.

The Renaissance Man

Article Abstract:

There is a very strong work ethic in Singapore, and it is unusual for its people to travel the world, according to Simon Tay. However, he spent some time in Latin America, and on his return founded Singapore Volunteers Overseas, which recruits young volunteers to work on schemes in developing countries. He now lectures in international and public law at the University of Singapore, but is still well known as an activist. His work includes being a director of the Singapore Environmental Council.

Waste not: government pushes water-conservation campaign

Article Abstract:

The government of Singapore has begun an aggressive water conservation campaign. In addition to public education, the government is exploring ties with neighboring Indonesia for water and is working with Middle Eastern countries to develop a desalinization plant. The goverment has even limited military water use and required water-saving toilets in new buildings. Singapore is working proactively because of the escalating demand brought on by economic development.
