Unfixing the markets

Article Abstract:

China's stock markets have never really taken off though they were instituted almost 15 years ago. The primary reason is that a majority of stakes are still retained by the government making the investors skeptical about their investments. A new type of investment fund supported by the Boston based State Street Corp, has come up with as a solution to resolve the impasse.

Hidden costs

Article Abstract:

Controlling the prices of commodities like fertilizers, fuel, medicines, transport and electricity and keeping them at artificially low prices, the Chinese Government tries to control inflation. The absurdly low prices have led to severe shortages of many commodities.

The Shanghai Composite Index has risen from its July 2005 level of 1,011 to 6,100 by October 2007, representing a P/E ratio of 71. The rise in the market is expected to persist because of continued fund inflows and strength of the Chinese economy.
