China's energy woes: running on empty

Article Abstract:

China is one of those nations that face perennial problem of energy shortage. It is perpetually grappling with oil and gas shortages. The need to formulate an energy policy for managing and coordinating the present resources to meet the current demands, and evolve a strategy that will ensure consistent availability of energy resources for future demand is discussed. The problems being faced by Chinese government in developing such energy policy are discussed and suggestions are offered for overcoming the same.

Perseverance pays: Arco will profit from patience in a China gas venture

Article Abstract:

US-based Arco proved the value of patience in making a deal with China's petroleum sector, with its Yacheng facility off Hainan island about to start pumping natural gas to Hong Kong's Black Point power plant. The project took 13 years to reach this point, including 9 years seeking a buyer. The joint venture involves Arco, China National Offshore Oil Corp, and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co, and cost $1.1 billion, with the world's second-longest undersea pipeline costing $550 million.

The economic progress of the former Soviet Union oil-giant, Kazakhstan is discussed. The countryEs oil exports and its relations with United States are also discussed. A comparative analysis of the growth of Kazakhstan with the other central Asian countries, i.e., Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kirgyzstan and Tajikistan is also furnished.
