Burning away the horrors

Article Abstract:

There are eight chemical weapons depots in the mainland US, and there is concern over degradation of aluminum rocket casings leading to leaks. There have been 113 'leakers' since 1984 at a depot in Umatilla, Oregon. The army plans to incinerate stockpiles of chemical weapons by 2002, with testing of facilities by 2000, and the project scheduled for completion by 2005. Demilitarizing the eight US sites will cost an estimated $15 billion. The incineration program poses environmental problems, and there will be increased demand for schools, housing, and road usage due to incomers employed on the project.
