Business agenda

Article Abstract:

S Korea's international trade relations are growing more complicated as its economy develops and it seeks membership in the World Trade Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Thus far it has focused on competition rather than cooperation, and importers cite an attitude favoring exports and discouraging imports. Trade disputes are increasing, notably with the US and the European Union, and the rising yen brings problems as well as opportunity, depending on the industry concerned.

Safety has a price

Article Abstract:

S Korea's ambitious plan to upgrade its infrastructure will ultimately force it to liberalize the financial and capital markets. Recent disasters have highlighted aging bridges and poor construction planning. The five-year plan to fix these problems involves 12 major projects slated for bidding this year, but none have reached that stage yet. Companies are reluctant to get involved because the govt has not yet made clear important aspects of its guidelines affecting whether or not the builder would turn a profit.

The show must go on: South Korea takes cable-television plunge

Article Abstract:

South Korea launched its cable-tv network on Mar 1, 1995, despite unprepared broadcasters, lack of programming, and a dearth of connected households. Of the 27 planned channels, 21 aired at least some material to the 135,000 homes - 1.3% of the total - wired for cable. The service costs $19 per month, plus $10 for the pay-movie channel. Most involved companies have invested heavily, and few expect to turn a profit soon, if ever. Many are looking for overseas investors to supply funds and programming.
