Loss of autonomy is feared

Article Abstract:

Efforts to revise Hong Kong's colonial-era legislations have raised public concerns over the legal immunity of China-backed financial institutions. Several noted analysts claim that the proposed reform legislations would favor Chinese securities, while undermining Hong Kong's financial services. The Chinese government, on the other hand, denied such allegations, claiming that the series of revisions would only aim to clarify Hong Kong's government stature and update several of the city's British legislations.

Swap deals swept under

Article Abstract:

Peregrine Investments Holdings Ltd's collapse rendered many of its contracts invalid which resulted in losses for the Indonesian and Thai companies that entered into currency swaps and other derivative contracts with Peregrine. The companies may be compelled to pay considerably more to line up protection, while others that are unable to enter into new contracts may collapse. Peregrine collapsed into liquidation in January 1998 partly because of huge potential losses from its bond-trading operations.

Vietnam war tunnels get new use as tourist site

Article Abstract:

The Cu Chi tunnel system near Ho Chi Minh City, North Vietnam is a 124-mile maze of underground passageways used by the Vietcong during the Vietnam War. US forces tried to destroy the tunnels but they never did manage to succeed and the structure is now a popular tourist attraction. The tunnels have been enlarged, the booby traps removed and electric lights have been installed to accommodate busloads of tourists, some of them former US servicemen who fought in the war.
