CMGI to buy 83% stake in Compaq's AltaVista site

Article Abstract:

CMGI has reached an agreement to acquire 83% of Compaq Computer Corp.'s AltaVista website. CMGI will pay $2.3 billion (2.22 billion euros) The transaction will also give Compaq a 16.4% share in CMGI, thereby making Compaq the largest outside investor in CMGI. CMGI is planning to turn AltaVista into key part of its Web business. CMGI controls shares in almost more than 40 Internet firms.

PC industry braces for weaker sales next year

Article Abstract:

The personal computer industry is experiencing fewer sales with weakest profits since 2001. Analysts expect sales to be down next year as well. Notebook personal computers with entertainment features have been selling well although there is concern that the market is becoming saturated.
