CROATIA: LECLERC'S GOAL IS 10 STORES BY 2006

Article Abstract:

Leclerc, the French retail group, is to open its first store in Croatia, at Zagreb in 2002. The sales outlet will employ 220 people and will have 6,000 square metres of sales space. Boris Vukasovic, of French-Croat nationality, is to pilot the development of E. Leclerc in Croatia. He is counting on his knowledge of the local area in order to make a difference. Leclerc intends to offer 'nicer products' which are 'less expensive' with a wide local assortment (95% of the products) although the best part will be French products. Although unemployment is high and the standard of living is low, the Croatian market has real potential. Some estimate that 65% of the country's GDP is generated by the grey economy. The opening at Zagreb is only the first stage for Leclerc, which is also targeting Split, Zadar, Rijeka. Its objective is to have a network of ten stores by 2006.
