Cable superpower

Article Abstract:

CEO Robin Biggam's strategy of strengthening the position of BICC Cables overseas has enabled the British cable and construction company to break free its of traditional markets in a cost-effective manner. Having long established itself in the now stagnating markets in the UK, Australia and Canada, BICC has decided to build a strong presence in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and the US. The decision to expand in continental Europe was prompted by its desire to meet the needs of large customers within the EC. BICC's construction half, Balfour Beatty, also actively operates in foreign markets. The company relies on its non-UK operations for about 15% of its turnover. All BICC subsidiaries are well-run, with all implementing the company's 'world best practice' program.

Alain Gomez tries to puzzle out a future for Thomson Group

Article Abstract:

Alain Gomez, CEO of the Thomson Group (the French electronics giant and the third largest electronics company in Europe), joined the firm at a time when it was losing $250 million annually. France's socialist president, Francois Mitterrand, was forced to nationalize the company despite its lock on lucrative French government contracts, but Gomez realized that with the predicted swing to the right in the upcoming national elections, Thomson could become denationalized. How Gomez was able to reduce the firm's annual losses to $4 million on sales of $6.6 billion in 1984 and his plans for the company as it prepares to compete with the large U.S. and Japanese firms are described.
