The future of the cable television industry is in question because of the increased popularity of satellite television services that offer more movies. The value of cable television leader TCI fell from $35 per share in 1993 to $13.50 per share in 1996, and the company has $14.5 billion in debt.

The US cable television industry intends to diversify into the Internet access business by adapting its coaxial and fiber optic infrastructure for two-way, high-bandwidth data communication. Cable modems are already in production at several firms, but significant obstacles to their use remain.
